History of Outback Steakhouse

Outback Steakhouse opened its first restaurant in Tampa, Florida in March 1988, founded by Bob Basham, Trudy Cooper, Tim Gannon and Chris T. Sullivan. They wanted a casual steakhouse without the formality of traditional ones. The Australian theme was purely a branding choice. None of the founders were Australian and the chain does not operate in Australia.

The Bloomin’ Onion arrived early and became the signature item. Through the 1990s the brand expanded across the United States, and in 1996 it opened its first international location in Canada. It later moved into South Korea, Brazil, Japan and other markets, with Brazil becoming one of its largest markets outside the US.

Outback is owned by Bloomin’ Brands, which also runs Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse. A group of locations in western states including California, Nevada, Arizona and Colorado is operated as a franchise by Out West Restaurant Group.
